Private schools should be abolished, the new leader of Britain's biggest teachers' union said yesterday.

Bill Greenshields, president of the National Union of Teachers, said his organisation should support "bringing all schools into the state sector".

"Then we would soon see some urgent improvements in our state system," he told the union's conference in Manchester.

Ban call: The president of the National Union of Teachers, Bill Greenshields

Mr Greenshields, 56, condemned the Government's backing of corporately sponsored city academies and what he called the "privatisation" of state education.

● The NUT is to ballot members on a series of strikes over teachers' 2.45 per cent pay rise and excessive class sizes.

That is a terrible idea, private schools would worsen to the state of some secondary schools including my former school where bad behaviour was everywhere and disinterested teachers were commonplace. I'm relieved to be out of compulsory education. I dread with terrible fear my nieces starting secondary education, after the second class citizen treatment I got and shall be doing everything in my power to make sure they get a private education and the best education possible.

Then I suppose, Mr Greenshields, all those teachers could then join your union.
