They were a picture of pride - the dashing RAF officer and his thrilled girlfriend.

Kate Middleton's appearance as Prince William received his "wings" yesterday appeared to confirm that marriage is on the cards when he leaves the military next year.

Happy couple: Prince William and Kate Middleton after the ceremony at Cranwell

It was the first time that Kate, 26, has joined the prince at a major official event since the future King - a serving officer in the British Army - graduated from Sandhurst in December 2006.

Her appearance on yesterday's guest list at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire was kept a closely-guarded secret.

A source said: "It was very hush-hush. William was determined not to create a fuss.

"He did consider not inviting Kate but she is his girlfriend and he wanted her there.

"All the other graduates brought their partners, so why shouldn't he? For what it is worth, she said she thought he looked gorgeous in his uniform."

Support: The passing out ceremony was the first official royal function Kate Middleton has attended since William became an Army officer in 2006

William, 25, has always dreamed of learning to fly and his four-month attachment with the RAF, which started in January, gave him the chance to keep up the family tradition.

His great-grandfather Prince Albert, later King George VI, served in the RAF between 1918 and 1919.

Since then Prince Philip, Prince Charles and the Duke of York have all qualified as pilots.

Like father, like son: Prince William after his first solo flight this year and his father, Charles, after his first flight in 1971

During yesterday's ceremony the Prince of Wales found himself looking up to his son, who is well over 6ft, as he presented his wings with the Duchess of Cornwall looking on.

Kate sat beside William's aunt, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, who lives a short drive from the air base.

Keeping dry: Camilla braves the April showers with her see-through umbrella

Later William, Charles and Camilla braved gusty winds and driving rain to inspect a series of aircraft lined up on the runaway, including the very Chipmunk in which Charles learned to fly. Asked whether he had enjoyed his tenure in the RAF, William, sporting his No1 Dress uniform in public for the first time, said: "It has been brilliant."

Wonder what the horrendous cost was of training him for a job he will never do. More toys for royal boys?
