Engineers at Heathrow airport have discovered the frozen body of a stowaway in the undercarriage of a freight plane, police said today.

Engineers found the body of the black man, believed to be of African origin, when they checked the DAS Air Cargo flight after it landed at Heathrow at 6.20am yesterday.

The stowaway is thought to have frozen to death - temperatures in undercarriage bays can reach minus 40C at high altitude.

The flight is believed to have originated in Entebbe, Uganda, stopping at Cairo, then the Belgian port of Ostend.

It is not known where the man stowed away on the aircraft.

The Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "We believe he is a stowaway. We are working to establish his identity."
