Police appealed for witnesses today after the brutal double rape of a 28-year-old woman as she walked home.

Two men pounced on the victim from behind as she got off a bus in Stoke Newington, north London, in the early hours of Monday.

She broke free from their grasp and fled but the attackers chased her and caught up with her.

Police said was then pushed over a wall into a grassed area in front of a block of flats and raped by both men.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Chiverton said: "This was a truly horrendous attack and the victim was subjected to a dreadful ordeal.

"We urgently need to hear from anyone with information, however seemingly small, that will help us with the inquiry."

The suspects are black and wore dark glasses and black gloves. One wore a woolly hat with ears. Both smelt strongly of alcohol.

Police believe the attackers may have just left a local nightclub or other late-night venue.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Stoke Newington police on 0207 275 3669 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
