But far from putting an end to rumours about her life and conspiracy theories about her death, opening the inquest has sparked a new wave of stories.
It has been claimed that Prince Charles plotted her death, that she was pregnant with Dodi Fayed's child, that she wanted a baby girl with her lover Hasnat Khan, and that she believed someone once tried to kill her in Hyde Park.
