Astoria to be knocked down for Crossrail

Music venue the Astoria is to be demolished to make way for a new Crossrail station, it has been confirmed.

The 2,000 capacity former theatre in Soho, which has hosted Rolling Stones and Nirvana, will be replaced with a concert hall in the new development in Tottenham Court Road.

Curtain falls: fans queue to see the Rolling Stones at the Astoria in 2003. The theatre is now to be demolished as part of the Crossrail scheme

Mayor Ken Livingstone's announcement comes after an unsuccessful campaign, supported by bands including Kaiser Chiefs and Maximo Park, to save the much loved venue.
