Admissions are up a quarter at the Buckinghamshire centre, which is currently caring for around 250 hedgehogs.

St Tiggywinkles founder Les Stocker said: "One minute it's hot and the young hedgehogs leave their mother and the next it's very cold and wet and they find they can't look after themselves.

"When they come to us they are really down and out, very dehydrated and cold and it takes eight to 10 weeks before they can be released back into the wild."
