Baby milk company recalls yet another product over health fears

More than 70,000 cans have been recalled

More than 70,000 cans of baby milk powder have been recalled today after customers reported finding lumps in the product.

SMA Nutrition has pulled two batches of Progress Follow-On Milk Powder in 900 gram cans from shop shelves.

The first batch carries the number Q8E103R26 and has a best before date of 09 10 2009 and the second batch has the number Q8E113R26 with a best before date of 10 10 2009.

A total of 70,380 cans sold in stores across the UK have been recalled.

It follows the recall of more than 40,000 cartons of a SMA liquid milk after parents complained it made their babies violently sick.

A spokesman said: "SMA Nutrition has received reports of lumps of milk powder being present in a small number of cans in batch number Q8E113R26, so as a precautionary measure we are recalling this batch.

"We are conducting an investigation into this matter to determine its cause. The lumps vary in size and colour. Some have the same colour as the milk powder, others are light brown through to dark brown in colour.

"As a further precautionary measure we are recalling the previously manufactured batch Q8E103R26."

SMA said it believed only a "very small" number of cans were affected.

The spokesman added: "SMA Nutrition sincerely regrets any inconvenience or concern this recall may cause our customers and would like to emphasise its commitment to ensuring the highest quality infant nutrition products for babies and young children."

Customers can call the SMA Nutrition careline on 0800 0890075 to discuss concerns and arrange for a replacement product.

Last week SMA Nutrition recalled a batch of more than 40,000 cartons of baby milk after customers complained that the product had curdled.

Parents complained their babies had vomited after drinking the product.

The company pulled 1-litre packs of SMA Gold ready-to-use liquid infant milk off shop shelves following 11 complaints.

The batch carried the code 06033G and had a best before date of March 12 2009.
