Baby playing on beach killed by boys throwing stones into the sea

Tragedy: A cliff edge in Bonifacio (file photo). The baby was killed when some boys threw rocks from a cliff into the sea and struck the infant

An eight-month-old baby died instantly when hit by a stone thrown by two youths on to one of France's most popular tourist beaches.

The child was killed in front of his parents' eyes at Bonifacio, on the Mediterranean holiday island of Corsica.

“The stone came flying down from a cliff face and hit the baby full on,” said an eyewitness.

“It had been thrown by two local boys who then ran away.”

Two teenagers aged 13 and 14 were arrested soon after last night's tragedy. They immediately claimed what happened was a “a complete accident”.

A local police spokesman said: “Emergency services attended extremely quickly but the baby was dead on arrival. The child did not stand a chance.

“Lots of people saw what happened, which meant that the boys were easily found. They claimed to be just playing around, and said it was pure chance that the baby was hit.”

The parents come from Thiais, south of Paris, and were described as “inconsolable”.

The boys made an appearance before José Thorel, prosecutor from the nearby town of Ajaccio.

He has opened an inquiry into involuntary manslaughter.

The boys, who have not been named for legal reasons, are next expected to appear before a youth court.
