Banged Up With Blunkett: Ex-Home Secretary to lock up teenage thugs in bizarre new reality TV show

David Blunkett will head up the parole board on the new Channel Five show

Former Home Secretary David Blunkett is to become a "reality television" host on a new programme that locks up juvenile delinquents.

The one-time close ally of Tony Blair is to head up the "parole board" on a new Channel Five show that sees 10 tearaways jailed for two weeks in a former prison.

Mr Blunkett, who was twice forced to resign from the Cabinet in disgrace over scandals involving his private life, will preside over the "social experiment", appearing every other day.

The participants will be lectured by former criminals on the need to go straight and put in front of a "parole board" headed by the former minister.

Entitled Banged Up With Blunkett, the new show is set to be broadcast later this year.

Mr Blunkett was the architect of the ID cards scheme and had a child by his mistress, Spectator publisher Kimberly Quinn, while in office.

Participants are all juvenile delinquents fearful they could end up in jail for real

He said: "The prime task of any criminal justice system is to prevent people from committing to crime in the first place, then to avoid re-offending.

"Getting across a clear message, forewarning young people what prison is like and encouraging them to take an alternative path in life has to make sense."

The 10 participants are all juvenile delinquents fearful they could end up in jail for real if they do not change their behaviour.

They will be locked up in a former prison in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, for the programme.

Bosses at Channel Five are working with charities, community groups and worried parents as well as pupil referral units to find their "convicts".
