Barack Obama resigns from his church after pastor's 'God damn America' rant
31 May 2008
Barack Obama is resigning a 20-year membership in the Trinity United Church of Christ in the aftermath of inflammatory remarks by former pastor the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
Obama campaign communications director Robert Gibbs said Obama had submitted a letter of resignation to the church and would discuss his decision in a session with reporters later Saturday.
Comments by Wright have posed an unwanted problem for Obama, front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Meanwhile, Democratic sources say the party has agreed to fully seat delegations from Michigan and Florida but give each delegate half a vote.
Rival Hillary Rodham Clinton campaigned Saturday in Puerto Rico, hoping for a strong showing in Sunday's primary with 55 delegates at stake.
Obama looked for victories in the final primaries in South Dakota and Montana on Tuesday, in which 31 delegates will be allocated.
Meanwhile, intermediaries for both candidates bartered and bickered in Washington, D.C. over the fate of 368 disputed convention delegrates from Florida and Michigan, a lingering dispute that threatened Democratic hopes for party unity at this summer's convention and in the general election campaign.
"Your actions today will put our party on a course of unity," Howard Dean, the party chairman, told members of the committee gathered at a hotel a few miles (kilometers) from the White House.
