She has been chair of the nation's elite sports performance agency since September 2003.
Her four-year appointment will see her continue as one of the key figures in the world class performance programme backing Great Britain and Northern Ireland's elite athletes in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Mr Burnham said the quest for private sector funding for elite sport would be a priority for Baroness Campbell as well as building on Team GB's success at the Beijing Games.
He said: "The lead up to London 2012 will be a crucial time for British sport as we look to consolidate our place as one of the leading sporting nations in the world. A top four finish at our home Olympics and being in the top two at the Paralympics are ambitious targets, but I am confident that with Sue at the helm both can be achieved."
Baroness Campbell said: "While I have no doubt this will be a rewarding four years, this period also brings with it a number of challenges.
"However, with the continued unprecedented support from the Government, the National Lottery and we hope now commercial sponsors, a board which offers expert advice and challenge, an organisation brimming with talented people and strong partnerships with everyone in the sporting landscape, I have no doubt that we will achieve our targets for 2012 and beyond."
