Overnight viewing figures showed that the BBC pulled in 4.9m viewers for its 10pm bulletin last night while the resurrected ITV News At Ten managed to draw in only 3.8m on average, including regional news bulletins.

An ITV spokesman said they were far from disappointed. He said: "We are pleased. We produced an excellent show and we're in this for the long term."

A spokesman for the BBC said: "Competition is good for viewers. And it was good to see so many people tuning in. It's too early to say how the ratings will pan out in the long term though."

Sir Trevor McDonald came out of semi-retirement to present the first edition of the News At Ten, which was last on the air in 2004.
