Beer goggles that stop teens from drink-driving

Schoolchildren have been asked to strap on 'beer goggles' that mimic the effects of alcohol in an effort to cut drink-driving deaths.

The goggles have distorted lenses similar to frosted glass, making wearers feel nauseous and disorientated.

They are being used in schools all over the country, as part of the Department for Transport's summer anti-drink-driving campaign, to show youngsters how excessive alcohol can make them lose control of their actions.

Costing £50 each, the goggles, which were invented in America, demonstrate the effect alcohol can have on a person's ability to perform simple tasks such as walking and, ultimately, driving.

One of the local authorities using the goggles is Leeds City Council in West Yorkshire - an area of the country with the highest number of alcohol-related road incidents.

Becky Prosser, from its road safety promotion unit, said: 'Hopefully, they will remember the time we went into school, they tried the goggles and couldn't stand up straight, and they will think twice before getting into a car with a drunk driver or even driving drunk themselves.'

On average, more than 3,000 people are killed or seriously injured in drink-related accidents every year, with those in the 17-to-24 age group most at risk.
