Belgravia's £6.3m square is 'Britain's most expensive'

BRITAIN'S most expensive streets are in Belgravia, research shows today. The average price of a property sold last year in Chester Square, SW1 was £6,296,000.

Residents have included Margaret Thatcher, Roman and Irina Abramovich and, in the past, Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein.

Located between Victoria and Sloane Square, the houses are stucco-fronted period properties, mostly terraced, surrounding a large green garden area.

The average price is down from £6,803,900 as a result of the credit crunch. However, one property in the square sold recently for almost £20million.

The survey, by Mouseprice.com, shows that the next highest prices last year were in a group of streets between the Hampstead and Highgate golf courses.

These addresses have jumped from sixth place in the table, replacing more traditional hot spots in Kensington and Chelsea. The roads are: Ingram Avenue, Courtenay Avenue, Winnington Road, The Bishops Avenue and Spaniards Close.

Ingram Avenue is now the second most expensive street, with an average value of £5,234,200.

Down to third place this year is last year's most expensive street - Courtenay Avenue in N6. Here, properties are now worth, on average, £5,193,120. Next on the list is the area near South Kensington Tube station.
