Binge-drink adverts in London to shock young

Images aimed at shocking teenagers against binge drinking will be displayed in London today.

They show a girl smearing vomit in her hair and a boy with blood on his face.

The posters appear alongside mannequins in Covent Garden shops made up to reveal the consequences of bingeing. The display will run for two weeks.

It forms part of a £4 million Home Office campaign targeting 18 to 24-year-olds, which will also feature online and TV adverts, aimed at demonstrating the effects of drinking too much.

One of the TV commercials shows a young man preparing for a night out who rips out his ear-ring, smashes a wardrobe door into his face, urinates on his shoes and pours a takeaway meal down his shirt. Another shows a young woman arranging vomit in her hair, smudging make-up down her face and tearing her clothes. They carry the slogan: "You wouldn't start a night like this, so why end it that way?"

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said: "Binge drinking is not only damaging to health but it makes individuals vulnerable to harm. People who are drunk are much more likely to be involved in an accident or assault, be charged with a criminal offence, contract a sexually transmitted disease or have an unplanned pregnancy."
