Blairs' new neighbours furious over security restrictions on parking

Tony Blair's new neighbours are furious after police cordoned off parking bays outside their homes.

The suspensions in Connaught Square, the latest in a series of security measures to protect the former Prime Minister and his family, have put several parking spaces out of use indefinitely.

Now frustrated residents and local politicians say the needs of locals are being placed a poor second to those of the Blairs.

Councillor Danny Chalkley, Westminster City Council's Cabinet member for economic development and transport, said: "We fully understand the security risks associated with the former Prime Minister, but we must balance this with the needs of all our residents and businesses to go about their daily lives."

Taking over: The Blairs' possessions are moved into Connaught Square, where residents are angry that parking has been suspended

He said: "We will be continuing to press the police in the strongest possible terms to ensure the arrangement is constantly reviewed so disruption to Mr Blair's neighbours is minimised." His views were echoed by residents, many of whom feel they have endured excessive disruption since the Blairs announced plans to move into their £3.65 million house.

Julia Landycheva, 20, a student who lives in the square with her partner, said: "It seems unfair that they have done this. We have lived here the longest but we have to pay the price for the Blairs moving in.

"Although I have not been affected yet, if they suspend any more spaces it would be a real pain."

Sheryar Jahangir, 38, who works in retail, said: "It's a nuisance because it is difficult enough trying to find a parking space anyway. It's certainly more difficult than it was this time last month."

A resident who would not be named said: "I'm surprised they have sealed off those parking bays because we were told this kind of thing would not happen.

"I am hoping they won't be suspended for a long time. If they are still suspended in six months' time I will be very annoyed."

Days before Mr Blair took up residence some neighbours signed a petition opposing his move into their community.

The petition, addressed to Westminster council, highlighted growing concerns about proposed security measures. These included:

Preventing vehicles and unauthorised pedestrians entering the west side of the square

Turning part of the square into a gated community, policed by armed guards

Chopping down or pruning some of the square's plane trees

A police spokesman said the parking suspensions would remain in place for the time being but their presence would be constantly under review.
