Blast protection for 1868 windows

They are 140 years old and have survived the Blitz.

But now the two spectacular stained-glass windows in the Egyptian Hall of Mansion House, the Georgian town palace which is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of London, are to be obscured for safety reasons.

The Corporation of London says the windows are a "potential safety hazard" as there is "no protection in the hall from shattering glass in the case of a blast occurring in the vicinity".

A study recommended covering the windows with bomb-blast curtains, which resemble light net curtains, to protect people inside.

The corporation has agreed the plan and will begin consulting English Heritage about it this year.

The windows were installed in 1868 and show scenes of London's history. The Royal Window shows King John sealing the Magna Carta in 1215 and the City Window shows Edward VI's coronation procession in 1547.

The windows were almost lost in the Second World War when nearby Bank Underground station was bombed, killing 117 people.
