The body of a 10-year-old boy who was swept away while playing on mud flats by a river was recovered today.
His body was found hours after falling in while playing with friends at 8pm last night.
Police, fire brigade and coastguard teams scoured the River Severn around Arlingham, Gloucestershire in the desperate hope they would find him alive.
But, tragically, their search was in vain. The hunt resumed at first light this morning.
Teams searched the River Severn in Gloucestershire for the 10-year-old boy
A Gloucestershire police spokesman said: ‘The boy had been playing with friends on the mud flats of the river near to Arlingham when he fell into some deep water.
‘The alarm was raised, and an extensive search commenced to locate the boy, conducted jointly An officer involved in the search added: ‘The family of the boy are obviously devastated and distraught and we are giving them counselling and support in this tragic situation.
‘Our hearts go out to them at this dreadful time.’
The Severn is a notoriously dangerous river with fast, swirling undercurrents and a rapidly rising tide level which has caused tragedies in the past by trapping people and sweeping them away as they walk on the mudflats.
