Boris injects £750,000 into tourism

BORIS JOHNSON announced a £750,000 boost to his tourism budget today to promote London as the best place in the world to visit, study and invest.

The Mayor said the extra funds, taking public-private investment to £3.25 million over the next four months, would help attract tourists and business travellers in the run-up to Christmas and beyond. But he faced immediate claims the new money would not be enough as he had already cut the City Hall budget to promote London abroad by almost a third - or £6.5million - since coming to power. Mr Johnson told tourism leaders at the Visit London Awards: "I want to ensure that London remains one of the world's most visited destinations." He said the investment was expected to deliver £70 million in economic benefit. Labour claimed previous cuts meant the capital's economy could miss out on hundreds of millions of pounds.
