Boris Johnson launches website to help London graduates find work
A website to help thousands of London graduates find work was launched today by Mayor Boris Johnson.
The scheme has been set up to assist people leaving university as they hunt for jobs in the current tough economic climate.
It will initially target the 100,000 graduates in London looking for employment and internships this summer, but will be opened up to more in the future.
Hailed by the Mayor as a way to harness the capital's "extraordinary pool of talent", the Helping Graduates Into Work site allows people to enter their degree subject and connect to a range of available jobs that suit them.
Mr Johnson said: "London will lead the way out of this recession but our longer term prosperity depends on nurturing the extraordinary pool of talent we have on our doorstep.
"We cannot afford to see our graduates' futures blighted by unemployment as they leave study. With a lack of opportunities in the capital, many may leave for good and that would be a disaster."
The online project forms part of the Mayor's Economic Recovery Plan — already on track to fulfil its pledge of providing more than 1,000 apprenticeships a year until 2012 — and has been developed jointly with The Careers Group, University of London.
As well as giving a range of job and career suggestions, including names of employers and salaries, it offers advice on job interviews and preparing CVs, and lists job fairs in London and internship schemes.
This website comes at a time when 18- to 24-year-olds in London make up almost 15 per cent of the working age population and account for 25 per cent of all jobseeker allowance claimants.
The job advice is on www.london.gov.uk/graduates
