Boy, 13, among six arrested over murder of teenager shot dead at barbershop

Tarek Chaiboub was shot dead on Spital Street in Sheffield last week

A 13-year-old boy was being questioned today after he was arrested on suspicion of the murder of a teenager who was gunned down as he went for a haircut.

Tarek Chaiboub, 17, was shot dead a week ago at a barber's shop in the Burngreave area of Sheffield.

Today police confirmed the 13-year-old boy was among six people arrested yesterday in connection with death in raids involving armed police in the city.

The other people being questioned are two 17-year-old boys, a 19-year-old man, a 22-year-old man and a woman in her 20s.

The males were arrested in the Petre Street area of the city and the woman was detained in the Sheffield Lane Top area.

Senior officers again repeated their belief Tarek's murder could have been gang-related and urged youngsters in the city not to get involved.

Witnesses differ about whether Tarek, who was nicknamed GT, was shot inside Frenchies hairdresser's on Spital Street or whether he was outside when the gun was fired.

The teenager collapsed on the street and died despite frantic attempts to save him by members of the public.

A handgun was found near his body and detectives are still trying to establish whether Tarek had been carrying that weapon.

Officers confirmed today they still have not recovered the murder weapon.

Today a mass of floral tributes and messages of condolences cover the side of the pavement where Tarek collapsed.

Speaking near the scene, Det Supt Neil Jessop, who is leading the investigation, said a lot of progress had been made in the inquiry and the public were continuing to give his officers good quality information.

Mr Jessop said the seven day anniversary was being marked today with a high visibility operation including a road block on the nearby main road Spital Hill so drivers can be asked if they have any information.

Tarek died just a week after he was subjected to a knife attack which left him in hospital.

He was killed just a few hundreds metres from where 16-year-old Jonathan Matondo was murdered with a shot to head last year.

After Jonathan's murder details emerged of gang rivalry in the area between groups named after the S3 and S4 postcodes.

Today, Sheffield police commander Chief Supt Paul Broadbent repeated his belief Sheffield had much less of a gun problem than other large UK cities and, also, how Tarek's murder seemed to have little connection with the Burngreave area as he was just visiting from his home in the Wincobank district, a few miles away.

But Mr Broadbent implored youngsters from any area not the get involved in gangs.

He said the time he had spent with Tarek's distraught father Rashid was one of the most difficult things he had ever done.

'It's unimaginable,' he said. 'I spent some time with Tarek's father and if people want to know what devastation this can lead to then just listen to parents like him.

'It is one of the most thought provoking and emotional moments in my 26 years of police experience.'
