Police swooped on the street in Nuremberg as Joshua Newton was preparing to shoot a scene for his movie "Iron Cross" which is due to make its debut at next year's Cannes film festival.

The movie stars Hollywood veteran Roy Scheider of "Jaws" fame and is a flashback thriller about a man who returns to Europe to avenge the murders of his family in WW2.

Mr. Newton, who has won awards for his work in the past, makes his mainstream directing debut with the film.

But unfortunately his producers failed to get the necessary permit allowing a man in a banned uniform from being seen in public.

Police held him, a cameraman and a producer for nearly 90 minutes.

Mr. Newton, who comes from Hampstead, west London, said; "The police were very correct but they made it plain that I was guilty of a serious offence.

"I think they will let us off with a warning and hopefully we will get the necessary permission to film later in the week."

Tom Cruise has turned parts of Berlin into swastika-draped movie sets in recent weeks for his film about a murder attempt on Adolf Hitler in WW2 – but United Artists managed to get all the necessary permits in place first.

A spokeswoman for the police in Nuremberg – where Hitler staged his bombastic Nazi party rallies – said: "Given the past of this city we do take things like this seriously."
