British hydrogen car you can rent for £200 a month

A British-designed hydrogen-powered car supported by Porsche was unveiled today.

Ernst Piech, eldest grandson of dynasty founder Ferdinand Porsche, has put £1million into the Riversimple vehicle, which is powered by a small 6kw fuel cell that runs on pressurised hydrogen gas.

The two-seater car has a top speed of 50mph, a range of 240 miles and is designed as an in-town runaround.

Its exhaust emits only water and its carbon footprint is a tiny fraction of a petrol car's if the hydrogen is from sustainable sources.

The car's designer, former motor racing engineer Hugo Spowers, aims to have 50 trial cars operating in a medium-sized city by 2012.

The car, revealed today at an event in Somerset House, will be leased at £200 a month with 15p a mile to cover fuel.

Mr Spowers said: "They are very nimble, have good acceleration and are fun to drive."
