British mother of two released after being held over 'free Tibet' protest in Beijing

Going home: Mandie McKeown will be making an earlier return to her Bristol home

A British woman arrested during a pro-Tibet protest in Beijing will be released and deported, following the personal intervention of Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

A Number 10 official confirmed that Chinese authorities had agreed to an early release of mother of two Mandie McKeown.

She was originally due to be deported on August 31.

Ms McKeown, 41, was arrested on Thursday while filming a Free Tibet protest in Beijing and told she would be held for 10 days without trial.

Her case was raised by Mr Brown when he met Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday.

A Number 10 official said: 'She will be released tomorrow. Our consul spoke to the MFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

'The MFA have taken notice of the personal interest of the Prime Minister.'

Ms McKeown's imprisonment drew criticism from lobby groups.

Philippa Carrick, chief executive of parliamentary lobby group The Tibet Society, said it was 'outrageous' that a person could be held without trial.

'She was just filming the protest, she was not touching a Tibetan flag or anything.

'I think she would have released the footage to You Tube if she had not been caught.

'It makes a mockery of the assurances about human rights that China has given to the Olympic Committee.'
