British-led online mosaic sets a new world record
07 May 2007
The Million Masterpiece can already boast more than 25,000 contributors, beating the previous record set in the US.
By charging a contribution fee the work has already generated £10m for Oxfam.
But the organisers of this unique piece do not want to stop there and intend to attract one million artists to this vast patchwork of images.

Just a small section of the Million Masterpiece
Celebrities, including playwright Sir Tom Stoppard and Bob Geldof's daughter Peaches, have created their own little square on the Million Masterpiece, using online software.
Images vary from self-portraits to sketches of objects important to the contributing artist.
Sir Tom drew a cricket bat, while his musician daughter-in-law Linzi Stoppard submitted an image of her electric violin.
Linzi Stoppard told The Daily Telegraph: "I think it's a good idea and has a good community feel.
"It was an opportunity to contribute to an art collaboration on a global scale using my laptop and mouse. To feel responsible for even one millionh of such a charitable cause is thrilling."
The previous world record for a collaborative work was 25,297 for A Little Dab of Texas, collated by Texan artist Jim Campbell on a 15 metre canvas in 1998.
Paul Fisher, who heads the project, announced the Million Masterpiece will eventually be printed on a massive 80m by 20m canvas.
