Briton arrested in Japan after 'shaking newborn son to death because it wouldn't stop crying'

A Briton has been arrested in Japan after allegedly shaking his newborn son to death.

Anthony Buckley, 20, was arrested at the Tokyo home he shared with his 19-year-old Japanese wife.

The alleged incident took place in June after the baby and his mother returned home from the maternity hospital.

Police said that Buckley was left alone with the child after his wife went back to work.

He is said to have shaken the 12-day-old infant  and banged its head against a table after he became 'stressed out' when it would not stop crying.

Buckley, who worked as an English teacher before losing his job, is believed to have moved to Japan to marry after meeting his wife over the internet.

His wife returned home to the apartment in the Ome district of the city to find that her son had been seriously injured.

The youngster died in hospital a day later after suffering a subdural hemorrhage thought to have been caused by the shaking.

Police initially treated the incident as an accident after Buckley claimed the child slipped through his hands into the bath.

Buckley, who speaks little Japanese, is thought to have moved to the country in 2007 after conducting a long e-mail relationship with the woman.

A spokesman for the British embassy in Tokyo said they were offering Buckley 'same consular services we would any arrested Briton'.
