Brown and Cameron share Scottish farming roots

Chancellor Gordon Brown and Tory leader David Cameron are descended from Scottish farmers who lived just 150 miles apart, according to a report today.

The politicians' ancestors are among the 24 million names contained in historical Scotland censuses from 1841 to 1901, fully indexed for the first time on the ancestry.co.uk website.

More follows...

Both Cameron and Brown are descended from Scottish farmers

The paternal great-grandparents of the two men are listed in the 1841 census, both as farmers. Ewen Cameron, born in 1781, appears as a 60-year-old farmer living in Inverness. John Brown, born in 1806, was a 35-year-old agricultural labourer living in a tiny village of Balmullo in Fife.

While the Browns never really left Fife until Gordon moved south in 1997, Ewen Cameron's son William made the leap. He joined the Caledonian Bank of Scotland and went to the Far East and eventually became the head of HSBC in London.

Ancestry.co.uk spokesman Simon Harper said: "Cameron is recognised as coming from blue-blooded stock and Brown is seen as working-class, but not so long ago their ancestors were living near each other and doing the same thing."

He added: "To have all the Scotland censuses fully indexed online for the first time is exciting news for the millions of Scots and those with Scottish ancestry who are thinking about, or currently researching, their family history."
