Brown on a mission to sell City's attractions to China

Gordon Brown was today flying to Beijing on a mission to sell London's City expertise to the Chinese.

The Prime Minister was expected to take an army of British business leaders with him with the aim of sealing multi-billion-pound investment deals.

His visit to the emerging superpower also aims to establish a long-term partnership on international issues and on action to tackle global warming.

His four-day tour will also take him to India, the second fastest-growing power on the world stage, for talks on business and international development.

Brown will hold talks with China's Premier Wen Jiabao in Beijing and is expected to take the chance to inspect the city's preparations for the 2008 summer Olympics.

The trip is Brown's first to the region as Premier. His agenda includes:

City - the PM and City grandees will deliver the message that London loves Chinese investment, in contrast with some rivals. Despite business jitters at the number of firms bought by Chinese sovereign wealth funds, Brown likes the door open, and will seek to sell the attractions of City financial expertise.

Global warming - China will soon overtake the US as the world's biggest carbon polluter. India's emissions are also ballooning. Neither country wants a cap on emissions so Brown is aiming to promote cleaner growth.

Darfur - Brown has made action on Darfur a key foreign policy objective. Premier Wen wants to make China a bigger international player. British officials hope their parallel interests can be harnessed to put pressure on Sudan.

Human rights - it is a long time since Britain lectured the proud Chinese leaders in public. Anything Brown says will be polite and in private.

Olympics - the Beijing Olympics are just seven months away and Brown aims to learn lessons for London 2012.
