Letter of sympathy: Gordon Brown has written to Chelsea Captain John Terry after he missed a penalty. Terry is comforted by Avram Grant
Mr Brown - who was himself to go down to defeat in the Crewe and Nantwich by-election the following day - wrote to tell the England international he was "an inspiration" and "a natural leader", adding that it was in troubled times that true leaders showed their courage and character by fighting back and going on to victory.
The Daily Mirror quoted a source close to Terry as saying: "The letter offered him some comfort and suggested that his strength of character would see him through a difficult time.
"John was very grateful that he had made the effort to contact him."
A Downing Street spokesman said only: "We don't comment on private correspondence."
Mr Brown, who was a keen sportsman in his youth, supports Scottish Second Division team Raith Rovers and Downing Street said that he watched last Wednesday's match as a neutral.
