David Smith appeared at Durham Magistrates' Court, where he admitted a single charge of disposing of waste - dead dogs - without a permit under the Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations.

• The 'killing fields'of 10,000 greyhounds too old to race
It was alleged that the father of three, of Seaham, Co Durham, could have killed and buried up to 10,000 greyhounds at £10 a time but the magistrates heard that the number was "substantially less" although no precise figure could be determined.
The magistrates retired to consider their sentence, with their maximum powers being a fine of up to £20,000 or six months in prison.
