Busiest burger bar in Britain to shut shop in Piccadilly

The best-known burger bar in Britain is to close after more than half a century.

The three-floor Burger King in Piccadilly Circus will serve its last Whopper in September, when its lease runs out.

The 10,700 sq ft site has been a Burger King since 1989 and before that was a Wimpy restaurant, itself a spin-off from the Lyons Corner House in nearby Coventry Street in the mid-Fifties.

Burger King said property company Land Securities would not be renewing its lease. It is not yet known which company will replace Burger King but it is thought likely to be a major retailer, with American youth fashion chain Abercrombie & Fitch one of the names beingmentioned.

The closure of Burger King marks the latest stage in a major sprucing up of the southern end of Regent Street and surrounding area.

A spokesman for Land Securities said: "It is an iconic spot below one of the most famous sites in London. It has very high footfall and it is a very prime site."

He insisted Burger King was pulling out voluntarily.

A spokeswoman for Burger King said: "We are currently working closely with all our staff from this restaurant in an effort to identify opportunities for employment at a nearby Burger King."
