C4 broke code with under-12s documentary

A Channel 4 documentary series in which 20 children lived without apparent adult supervision for a fortnight was today found to have breached a broadcasting code.

Media watchdog Ofcom said that the broadcaster had failed to explain sufficiently to viewers that the under 12s participating in Boys And Girls Alone had access to safeguards to ensure their welfare. There were trained chaperons on hand and producers were given expert advice.

It said in a report today that information presented to the audience "was insufficient to reassure viewers about their [the children's] welfare, given the editorial purpose of the series and the specific context of episode one".

Channel 4 was cleared by Ofcom of more serious accusations relating to child welfare. The four-part series was broadcast in February.

Julian Bellamy, Head of Channel 4, said: "Careful consideration and preparation was undertaken to ensure that the welfare of the children who participated in Boys and Girls Alone was paramount at all times and we are extremely pleased that this has been confirmed by Ofcom's investigation.

"Channel 4 notes Ofcom's recommendation to be particularly mindful of the sensitivities of viewers with regard to factual programming of this nature involving children."
