Call for nurseries to open at weekends

Parents want childcare nurseries to open at weekends and evenings to cater for the demands of modern working hours, a government-backed survey has found.

The survey found dissatisfaction with the restricted opening hours of nurseries, despite the billions of pounds of investment they have received from the Government.

Almost all nurseries open at 8am and close at 5.30pm or 6pm, with many fining parents who collect children late.

Ministers backed the Listening to Families report, saying they expected government-funded nurseries to open later.
