Calorie count on menus is first for London

A London restaurant chain today became the first in the UK to put calorie counts on all its menus.

The Real Greek allows customers to "health check" their favourite foods as part of a government-sponsored initiative to tackle obesity.

Diners may be shocked that a small portion of taramasalata contains 805 calories - just under half the 2,000 daily recommendation for a woman.

Eaten with a Greek flatbread (642 kcal) and a lamb kebab (558 kcal), a female customer could eat her entire day's recommended food intake.

Liz Williams, managing director of The Real Greek, which has seven restaurants across London, said: "The calorie content helps customers feel more in control of what they're eating."
