The survey found that while men would prefer the Chancellor to be prime minister, women backed Mr Cameron over Mr Brown by 42 per cent to 30 per cent.

This means the Tories' latest lead over a Brown-led Labour party - 38 per cent to 34 per cent - is entirely down to women.
But allies of the Chancellor will be heartened by the narrowing gap with Mr Cameron.
The Tory leader was ahead by eight points last month but his lead is now only half that. Figures show that men favour Labour under Mr Brown by 37 to 34 per cent over the Tories under Mr Cameron. When asked about current voting intentions, Labour under Tony Blair are on 33 per cent to the Conservatives' 36 per cent overall. The Lib-Dems are up two points at 20 per cent.
The latest Times/Populus poll figures contrast sharply with most of the Blair era when the Tories' traditional lead among women virtually disappeared.
It appears that Mr Cameron has captured some of Mr Blair's appeal to female voters, which is significant because woman kept the Tories in power for much of the 20th century. Similarly, Labour won a landslide among men and women in 1997 and 2001, but at the last election men deserted the party for the Conservatives, while many women stayed with Mr Blair.
