Campaigners want statue of Battle of Britain hero to stand on fourth plinth

This is the design for a statue of Battle of Britain hero Sir Keith Park, unveiled today at City Hall.

Campaigners want the sculpture to be installed on Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth for six months next year.

There are also plans for a permanent statue in Waterloo Place in September 2010 the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The unveiling followed an international competition won by sculptor Les Johnson, who is currently working on a slavery memorial for Hyde Park.

New Zealand-born Sir Keith was Air Vice-Marshal commanding the defence of London and the South-East in the Battle of Britain. His leadership and tactics were central to Britain winning.

The temporary statue for the fourth plinth is likely to be nearly six-metre tall and the bronze statue for Waterloo Place will be three metres.

Proposals for a permanent tribute are backed by Boris Johnson. The Mayor said: "I look forward to seeing the full scale statue in place in the heart of the capital."

Planning applications for the temporary and permanent memorials will be submitted next month.
