Cancer girl will finally go to Disney World after insurers refused to cover her trip

When a charity offered to fly her to Florida with her family, Paige Nuttall felt her dreams had come true.

The young cancer patient's hopes were later dashed though when as many as 20 insurance firms refused to cover her for the trip to Disney World.

Now - thanks to the Daily Mail publicising her plight - a number of companies have stepped forward to help.

Dream break: Paige and her mother Jane

With cover finally in place and an all-clear from doctors, Paige, 12, is again preparing for her fortnight in the U.S. in September.

Her mother, Jane, 37, said: "I could cry - it's unbelievable. We genuinely thought our chances had all but gone."

Paige will travel to Florida with her parents, her sister Skye, eight, and her brother Reece, five.

"It's a dream come true," said her father, Nick, 33, a civil engineer. "It's such a huge relief. We seem to have gone from one extreme to another.

"At one point we didn't think we would be going but her story had such an impact on people that we were inundated with offers of assistance and well wishes.

"Within a couple of days we had received an offer from a firm and with the all-clear from the doctors Paige has been a totally different girl. She's smiling again."

Paige has had two operations to remove a brain tumour which was discovered in November 2005.

Although her treatment finished in February she remains weak and often uses a wheelchair. She cannot be given a final all-clear for ten years.

At the family home in Clay Cross, Derbyshire, Mrs Nuttall said: "Paige has been through so much since she was diagnosed 18 months ago. She is fed through a tube and has not eaten properly since January last year.

"It's been incredibly hard for her. She has spent a long time in hospital and has undergone intense treatment. Yet she has smiled throughout and always stayed happy and cheerful."

Paige was chosen by the Wish Upon A Star charity to travel to the U.S. more than a year ago. But when the family applied for travel insurance they hit a brick wall.

One firm said they would insure Paige but wanted to charge £3,000.

"We knew getting insurance would be difficult but we didn't think it would be impossible," said Mr Nuttall, who spent more than 20 hours on the phone trying to secure cover.

"It was heartbreaking. Paige kept blaming herself. Now, after getting the insurance, she's over the moon. We've had a couple of setbacks recently with Paige's health.

"But the excitement is still there and it's increasing as each day passes."

The insurance company which offered to help Paige and her family is ACE European Group. Their staff were contacted by Rotherham Insurance Brokers after the Mail covered Paige's story last month.
