Canned spirits up as alcopop bubble bursts

Gin and tonic in a can and ready-mixed Cosmopolitans served in bottles are becoming the drink of choice for millions of Britons.

New figures today show an "exponential" growth in the popularity of ready-made classic drinks, while sales of alcopops have collapsed.

This year Britons will spend £29million on pre-mixed spirits in cans and another £18million on cocktails sold by the bottle. Within five years market researcher Mintel forecasts the market will be worth £106 million.

Some 286million litres of alcopops were sold in the UK in 2004, compared with a projected 90million litres this year.
