'Cannibal killer' surrenders after manhunt

The suspected cannibal killer of a German adventurer on a South Sea island has given himself up after a 50-day manhunt by police and troops.

Henri Haiti, 31, vanished after the bones and teeth of round-the-world sailor Stefan Ramin were found in a campfire on Nuku Hiva in French Polynesia. Haiti, who turned up at his father's home and told him to call police, was due in court today accused of murder and sexual assault.

Local prosecutor Jose Thorel said: "In the end the pressure of the hunt was too much for him."

Mr Ramin, 41, and his girlfriend Heike Dorsch arrived in September on Nuku Hiva, where Haiti was a guide and hunter. Ms Dorsch, who is back in Germany, has claimed Mr Ramin went into the forest to hunt goats with Haiti and never returned.

She said Haiti threatened to kill her, chained her up and she was convinced he intended to rape her, but she struggled free. Mr Ramin's remains were found the next day.

Authorities have denied there is cannibalism on the island but speculation has been rife that Haiti, who has a tattoo of a cannibal warrior on his chest, ate parts of his alleged victim.
