Carnival police use 'ring of steel' to curb violence and crime

A "ring of steel" will be enforced around this year's carnival in an attempt to stamp out violence and crime.

Police with metal detectors - and others using stop-and-search powers - will be deployed around the perimeter for the first time. Other intelligence-led teams will try to stop known gangs or groups of troublemakers travelling to west London over the Bank Holiday weekend. Cars belonging to people believed to be carrying weapons will be intercepted, while knife arches or metal detectors will be installed at Tube and rail stations. In total, 11,000 Met officers will be working at the event, plus hundreds of British Transport Police.

The operation is expected to cost more than the £6 million bill for policing last year, when five people were stabbed and 270 arrested. Police point out this was fewer than in previous years. However, with unprecedented concern about knives, the Met has launched Operation Razorback, rounding up people they fear might disrupt the carnival. Three men have been arrested.
