Checks on Crete death mother's two other sons

The London mother accused of killing her newborn son in Crete was today set to be investigated by social services in Britain, the Standard has learned.

Leah Andrew is charged with suffocating the baby moments after he was born in a hotel room in the seaside resort of Malia. The 20-year-old has been charged with infanticide and could face up to 20 years in jail. She denies the charge.

Social services will now ensure her two other sons, aged two and one, are safe. The children are being cared for by Miss Andrew's parents, Isaac and Pamela, at the family home in Hither Green, and Lewisham council confirmed it had made contact with them.

It is thought social services were aware of Miss Andrew, who lived at a residential unit for young mothers until two months ago.

Greek police found the body of the 5lb 8oz baby wrapped in a towel on Monday. A coroner's report indicated the infant had been asphyxiated.

Miss Andrew told police she panicked after going into labour alone and did not deliberately kill her baby.

She is on suicide watch in a hospital.
