Child health groups 'may sue' over additives

16 September 2007
The Food Standards Agency is under fire following research which found common food dyes and a preservative caused children to become hyperactive.
The watchdog says it has had legal advice against supporting a ban and manufacturers should decide for themselves on whether to remove the additives.
However, this policy has been challenged by health crusaders. The Children's Food Campaign, representing more than 170 health and consumer bodies, is confronting the stance.
Spokesman, Richard Watts, said: "We have checked with the European Commission and it says a country can suspend the use of additives where there is evidence of harm."
The campaign is investigating whether the FSA can be challenged in court.
