Church tower still on the market after 10 years

Americans are being offered a church conversion for sale at £4million - even though its owner has not been able to sell it in 10 years.

The church tower on a busy road in Crystal Palace is being marketed through a Los Angeles-based estate agents.

Gipsy Tower is for sale on the website of John Bruce Nelson Associates at $5.495million - or £3.995million at current rates.

The tower, at the corner of Gipsy Hill and Highland Road, is billed as "the only castle church single dwelling in London". The American estate agents describe it as "a detached 120-ft high Grade II-listed castle church". Its English owner John Rubinow said he had tried to sell Gipsy Tower over the past decade but all offers had fallen through.

Neighbours in Gipsy Hill expressed surprise at the price.

One said: "I am amazed. I heard it was on the market last year for £1.5million. But for it to be on the market for £4million is a huge price hike. I suppose Americans might fall for it."

Mr Rubinow, 47, bought the tower as a wreck in 1995. His website gipsytower.com advertises the property.

Mr Rubinow said he would dismantle his tower and export it if he could not sell it. "They did it for London Bridge and who's going to stop me?"
