William Dudley, 28, who works for Lloyd's of London syndicate Hiscox, is aiming to raise thousands of pounds for the Mark Evison Foundation. He and Lieutenant Evison, 26, from Dulwich, were friends at Oxford Brookes University. Lt Evison was shot last year as he attempted to lead his men out of a Taliban firefight, and died in hospital in Birmingham.
His mother Margaret hopes the foundation will give children with the same adventurous spirit as her son a chance to realise their dreams.
Mr Dudley, from Fulham, said the boxing "ties in with Mark's personality. He was up for any challenge".
He is one of four "City boys" preparing for the six-minute bouts — in front of a 1,000-plus crowd — at The Troxy in Commercial Road on October 21. He and the others — Stewart Cruickshank, 40, Kevin Carlier, 55, and Liam Tarf, 27 — also hope to raise cash for the Factory East gym in Bow, where they are training one night a week. The gym doubles as a community centre and offers a fresh start to teenagers.
Their trainer Joe Pirotta, 28, said: "They're coming along quickly."
