Cocaine scandal TV presenter Mark Speight left TWO suicide notes before hanging himself

Mark Speight left two suicide notes before being found hanged, an inquest heard yesterday.

Police investigating the death of the 42-year-old children's TV presenter discovered one letter on his body and another at a flat - believed to be the home he shared with his fiancee Natasha Collins.

The contents of the notes have not been revealed but it is understood they detailed his feelings of guilt and heartbreak over the death of the 31-year-old actress and model.

He had discovered her body in a scalding hot bath on January 3 after the couple had spent the night at home in St John's Wood, North London, drinking and taking cocaine.

On Sunday he was found hanging in an isolated part of Paddington railway station after being missing for six days.

Inner West London coroner Dr Paul Knapman, who opened and adjourned the inquest yesterday, said: "The full circumstances will be explored at the resumption of the inquest in what appears to have been a double tragedy."

A post mortem carried out on Tuesday confirmed the cause of his death as hanging, Detective Inspector William Jordan of the British Transport Police told the inquest.

Mr Jordan confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances.

No members of Mr Speight's family attended the two-minute hearing, which will resume on May 20.

After the hearing, Mr Speight's best friend criticised the police search for the missing presenter.

Stuart Goldsmith said officers had searched Mr Speight's home in St John's Wood the day after he went missing.

He added: "If they were searching the flat and they didn't find it (suicide note) then they are not very good at their job.

In love: The TV presenter with his partner, Natasha Collins, who was found dead in January. The couple met on the children's TV show SMart

"If they did find it, then why did they not find him quicker?"

Mr Speight had hosted the BBC children's art show SMart for 12 years.

He also spent four years presenting ITV's Saturday morning show Scratchy and Co.

He met Miss Collins in 1999 on the set of the CBBC show See it, Saw it.

After her death, Mr Speight was arrested on suspicion of her murder and supplying drugs however no charges were brought against him.

But he resigned from the BBC in February saying the grief made it impossible to continue. Soon afterwards he moved in with his fiancee's mother, Carmen Collins, 57, in Palmers Green, North London.

She spoke of taking him into her home as a 'broken man' and of hearing him sobbing in his sleep.

He appeared distressed at the inquest into his girlfriend's death just one week before he vanished.

Yesterday Mr Goldsmith also criticised the two policemen who came across Mr Speight in Kilburn on the day he disappeared.

The officers were so concerned by his behaviour they offered him medical attention but he refused.

Mr Goldsmith said: "Why didn't the two officers that saw him take him to one side and hold him there for his own safety and wait for a member of his own family to get him?"
