Combined diplomas will lead to drop in standards, says professor

Schools Minister Jim Knight said employers and educators backed the diploma
Diplomas hailed by ministers as a flagship qualification are a 'disaster waiting to happen', an education expert has warned.
A report by Professor Alan Smithers said the qualifications, to be introduced in September, will not prepare youngsters for work or university - and could lead to a drop in academic standards.
He accused ministers of 'leading the country blindfolded' into a huge education upheaval.
The diplomas, to be phased in during the next five years, combine academic study and vocational training.
Ministers have refused to guarantee that A-levels and GCSEs will survive beyond 2013. In his report Professor Smithers went on: 'The diploma is supposed to be all things to all people. But it is doubtful one qualification can be fit for the range of purposes that need to be served.'
Schools Minister Jim Knight said: 'The diploma has backing from employers, universities, schools, colleges and education experts.'
A spokesman for the Prime Minister said: 'We are committed to offering young people a choice of high-quality options.
'The PM has said many times that A-levels and diplomas will go side by side and that both qualifications will be examined in a review in 2013.'
