Comment: Garden city

London's garden squares are models of town planning, providing green space for residents more economically than private gardens do, and offering a place in which neighbours and their children can meet and play away from traffic. Now Kensington and Chelsea council would like to open some of its prize examples for occasional visits by local schools and voluntary groups. The success of London Open Squares Day shows that such openings provide pleasure to visitors, and do not lead to damage. Provided there is proper notice and the scheme operates on specific dates, residents should give it a welcome.
