Comment: Going to the dogs

Its huge, green-and-pink neon sign may be a landmark but tomorrow night is the last for Walthamstow Stadium, one of the capital's three remaining dog tracks, which has been sold to property developers. It is a loss for the 500 people whose jobs are linked to the track, for the dog racing fraternity - a remarkably diverse group - and for the local community which has taken great pride in its stadium. A group of supporters is now negotiating with the developers to keep the track open: everyone who cares about London's traditional sporting culture will hope they succeed.
