Comment: on the plinth

The fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square is probably the greatest exhibition space in London. And for 100 days, it will also be the space of choice for exhibitionists - as members of the public occupy it for an hour at a time, 24 hours a day to become living exhibits in Anthony Gormley's One and Other. It should become one of the must-do activities of the season, whether or not anyone falls off. But there is also something inspired about Yinka Shonibare's proposal for a scale replica of Nelson's ship, HMS Victory, in a bottle, with sails made from African fabric purchased in Brixton market. The prospect of the Victory in Trafalgar Square, under the one-eyed gaze of Nelson, is both cheering and poignant.
